12-Day Best of Ethiopia Birding Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Ethiopia, a country known for its rich birdlife and diverse landscapes. Embark on a 12-day birding adventure, starting from Addis Ababa and exploring some of the best birding spots in the country.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa

Upon your arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will transfer you to your hotel. Take the rest of the day to relax and acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 2: Addis Ababa City Tour

Start your day with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the famous fossilized hominid, Lucy. Explore the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Ethnological Museum to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia. In the afternoon, visit the Entoto Mountains for a panoramic view of the city and birdwatching opportunities.

Day 3: Debre Libanos

Leave Addis Ababa and drive to Debre Libanos, a monastery located in a beautiful mountainous setting. Enjoy birdwatching along the way and explore the monastery and its surroundings. Keep an eye out for endemic bird species such as the Ethiopian endemic Sombre Rock Chat and White-collared Pigeon.

Day 4: Awash National Park

Depart for Awash National Park, known for its diverse birdlife and stunning landscapes. Explore the park on foot or by vehicle, looking out for species like the Abyssinian Roller, Somali Ostrich, and Vulturine Guineafowl. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the wildlife before heading to your lodge for the night.

Day 5: Langano

Drive to Lake Langano, a birdwatcher's paradise with its rich variety of waterbirds. Take a boat trip on the lake, spotting species like the African Fish Eagle, Great White Pelican, and African Jacana. In the evening, relax on the shores of the lake and enjoy the peaceful ambiance.

Day 6: Awasa

Continue your journey to Awasa, another beautiful lake known for its birdlife. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore, spotting various waterbirds and endemic species like the Black-headed Siskin and Banded Barbet. Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner and overnight stay in Awasa.

Day 7-9: Bale Mountains National Park

Head towards Bale Mountains National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a haven for birdwatchers. Spend three days exploring the various habitats of the park, including Afro-alpine moorland, bamboo forests, and Harenna Cloud Forest. Look out for the Ethiopian Wolf, Wattled Ibis, and Blue-winged Goose among many other species.

Day 10: Back to Addis Ababa

Return to Addis Ababa, stopping along the way for birdwatching opportunities. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, complete with cultural performances.

Day 11: Addis Ababa Exploration

Spend your last full day in Addis Ababa exploring the local markets, such as Merkato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets. Visit the Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum, dedicated to the victims of the Derg regime. Enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony and shop for souvenirs to take home.

Day 12: Departure

After breakfast, our representative will transfer you to the airport for your departure flight. Bid farewell to Ethiopia, taking with you wonderful memories of the country's birdlife and natural beauty.
